- 🎯 Goal: Play smooth connected notes using hammer-ons and pull-offs without picking every note
The Sound of Fluid Guitar Playing
Every time you hear a guitarist play a fast smooth run of notes without the sharp attack of a pick on every note that is legato technique. Hammer-ons and pull-offs are the two building blocks of legato playing. They connect notes smoothly, add expression to melodies and make fast runs possible without superhuman picking speed.
These techniques appear everywhere — blues licks, rock solos, fingerpicking patterns, chord embellishments. Once you have them in your hands you will use them constantly without even thinking about it.
1. What is a Hammer-On
A hammer-on is when you pick one note and then tap a higher fret with another finger hard enough to sound the note without picking again. The tapping motion — hammering down onto the string — is what creates the sound.
In tab notation a hammer-on is shown with an h:
e |--0h2--|
B |-------|
G |-------|
D |-------|
A |-------|
E |-------|
Pick the open high E string. Then hammer your middle finger onto fret 2 firmly and quickly. The second note should ring clearly without picking again. If it sounds weak you are not hammering hard enough or fast enough.
2. What is a Pull-Off
A pull-off is the reverse of a hammer-on. You have two fingers on the string — you pull the higher finger off the string in a small downward flicking motion which sounds the lower note without picking.
In tab notation a pull-off is shown with a p:
e |--2p0--|
B |-------|
G |-------|
D |-------|
A |-------|
E |-------|
Place both your index finger on fret 1 and middle finger on fret 2 of the high E string. Pick fret 2. Then pull your middle finger off with a small downward flick — almost like you are plucking the string with your fretting finger. The open string should ring clearly.
💡 Key detail: pull-offs require the lower finger to already be in place before you pull off. You are not just lifting — you are flicking downward to sound the lower note.
3. Combining Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs
The real power comes when you combine both techniques into flowing legato runs. Pick one note and hammer and pull your way through a phrase with only one pick stroke at the start.
e |--0h2p0h2p0--|
B |-------------|
G |-------------|
D |-------------|
A |-------------|
E |-------------|
Pick the open string once. Hammer to fret 2. Pull off back to open. Hammer to fret 2 again. Pull off again. One pick stroke — five notes. This is legato playing in its simplest form.
4. Hammer-Ons Within Chords
Hammer-ons are not just for single note runs. They can be used within chord playing to add movement and decoration to rhythm parts. This is called a chord embellishment and it is what gives acoustic guitar playing that beautiful flowing quality.
Classic example on G chord:
e |--3--------3--|
B |--0--------0--|
G |--0--------0--|
D |--0h2------0--|
A |--2--------2--|
E |--3--------3--|
Strum the G chord. Then hammer your ring finger onto fret 2 of the D string while the chord is still ringing. This adds a passing note that gives the G chord movement and life. This exact technique appears in countless acoustic songs.
5. The Pentatonic Connection
Hammer-ons and pull-offs are most commonly used with the pentatonic scale — the scale you will learn in Lesson 19. Almost every blues and rock lick you have ever heard uses these two techniques together with the pentatonic scale.
For now just get comfortable with the mechanics. When you learn the pentatonic scale in Lesson 19 these techniques will slot straight in and suddenly those guitar hero licks will be within reach.
6. Building Hammer-On and Pull-Off Strength
Weak hammer-ons and pull-offs almost always come down to one of these problems:
- Not hammering hard enough — the finger needs to come down fast and firm. Think of tapping a piano key hard — not pressing slowly
- Not pulling off in the right direction — pull slightly downward toward the floor, not just lifting straight up
- Finger too far from the fret — always hammer and pull right behind the fret for maximum clarity with minimum effort
- Not enough finger independence — if your other fingers lift when you hammer or pull, practice keeping them anchored close to the strings
Practice Checklist
Complete every item before moving to Lesson 15.
- ☐ Basic hammer-on — open high E string to fret 2, pick open, hammer to fret 2, second note must ring clearly, 20 repetitions. Target: 5 minutes
- ☐ Basic pull-off — fret 2 to open high E, pull off with downward flick, open string must ring clearly, 20 repetitions. Target: 5 minutes
- ☐ Combined hammer and pull — 0h2p0 on high E string, one pick stroke, 3 notes, 20 repetitions. Target: 5 minutes
- ☐ All fingers hammer-on drill — on any string, hammer fret 1 with index, then fret 2 with middle, then fret 3 with ring, then fret 4 with pinky, one pick stroke, 4 notes, 10 repetitions. Target: 5 minutes
- ☐ Legato run — 0h2p0h2p0 on high E, one pick stroke, 5 notes, slow and even, 20 repetitions. Target: 5 minutes
- ☐ G chord embellishment — strum G chord then hammer onto fret 2 D string, let it ring, repeat 10 times smoothly. Target: 5 minutes
- ☐ Hammer-ons on all strings — repeat basic hammer-on drill on every string from low E to high E. Target: 8 minutes
- ☐ Bonus — find a lick — search “beginner hammer on pull off lick tab” on Ultimate Guitar, find one you like and try it slowly. Target: 5 minutes
