Lesson 1 — Setup & Posture: The Foundation Every Guitarist Needs
Lesson 1 — Setup & Posture: The Foundation Every Guitarist Needs

Estimated Time: 30 minutes    📋 Requirements: A guitar, a chair, GuitarTuna app    🎯 Goal: Hold the guitar correctly before touching a single chord

How to Hold a Guitar the Right Way

Most beginners skip this. They grab the guitar, find a chord on YouTube, and wonder why everything sounds wrong and their hand hurts after 10 minutes.

Posture is not boring. Posture is the difference between building good habits from day one or spending months unlearning bad ones.

1. Acoustic or Electric — Does It Matter?

Not much. The principles are the same for both.

Acoustic guitars are bigger and louder with no amp needed. Great for beginners who want to play anywhere.

Electric guitars have thinner necks and lighter strings which are actually easier on your fingers. They need an amp but are physically easier to play.

2. The Anatomy of the Guitar

Before you play anything you need to know what you are talking about.

  • Headstock — the top of the guitar where the tuning pegs are
  • Tuning Pegs — turn these to tune your strings
  • Nut — the small piece at the top of the neck where the strings rest
  • Neck — the long part you wrap your hand around
  • Frets — the metal strips across the neck
  • Fretboard — the flat face of the neck where you press the strings
  • Body — the big round part where the sound resonates
  • Soundhole — the hole in the middle of an acoustic body
  • Bridge — at the bottom of the body where the strings are anchored
  • Strings — 6 of them. Thickest to thinnest: E A D G B E

💡 Memory trick: Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie

3. How to Sit With a Guitar

Get a chair with no armrests. A stool is perfect.

  • Sit up straight — tall and relaxed, not rigid
  • Rest the waist of the guitar on your right thigh (left if left handed)
  • The back of the guitar presses flat against your chest
  • The neck points left and slightly upward — never drooping down
  • Neck should always be at least shoulder height
  • Strumming arm rests over the top of the body just above the soundhole

⚠️ Most common mistake: letting the neck droop down toward the floor. Keep it up.

4. Your Fretting Hand

This is the hand that presses the strings on the neck.

  • Thumb sits behind the neck pointing upward toward the headstock
  • Fingers come over the top and press down from above
  • Press with your fingertips — not the flat pads
  • Keep a small gap between your palm and the neck
  • Think of holding a tennis ball — curved, relaxed, open

5. Your Strumming Hand

  • Use your thumb to strum downward across all 6 strings for now
  • Rest your forearm lightly on the top edge of the guitar body
  • Strum from the wrist — not the whole arm
  • Small motion. The wrist does the work

6. Tuning Your Guitar

A guitar out of tune sounds terrible no matter how well you play. Always tune before you practice. No exceptions.

  • Download GuitarTuna — free, works perfectly for beginners
  • The 6 strings in order: E A D G B E
  • Tune every single session without exception

Practice Checklist

Complete every item before moving to Lesson 2.

  • Posture Check — sit correctly 3 times from scratch until natural. Target: 5 minutes
  • Anatomy Drill — point to and name every part of the guitar out loud. Target: 5 minutes
  • Tuning — tune all 6 strings until all green in GuitarTuna. Target: 5 minutes
  • Open String Strum — 10 slow downward strums, repeat 3 sets. Target: 10 minutes
  • Hand Position Hold — hold both hand positions for 60 seconds without tensing. Target: 2 minutes
